THE PLANNED PROJECT WILL INCLUDE 102 WIND TURBINES WITH A TOTAL CAPACITY OF 408 MW.

Alpha Wind Energy (AWE), a Danish wind energy consortium, is planning a major offshore wind energy project in Hawaiian federal waters that will result in the building of two floating wind farms off the southern and northwest costs of the island of Oahu, and according to Jens Petersen, the AWE managing director, the company has given a lease request to the U.S. Interior Department for two offshore wind projects, consisting of 51 turbines each, which combined will have a 408 MW (megawatt) capacity.

THE TURBINES WILL BE LOCATED NO CLOSER TO LAND THAN 12 MILES.

Due to the fact that land is not in abundant supply in Hawaii, offshore wind energy makes sense for the U.S. state. However, at the same time, it has become important to find the ideal location, as wind turbines can be eyesores if they are too close to the shore, which could have a negative impact on tourism. Furthermore, there are also the military and ocean resource stakeholders that need to be considered.

AWE has taken all of this into consideration in its proposal and managed to find a way to avoid potential issues. It has accomplished this by proposing to locate one of its wind farms off Oahu's South Shore, about 17 miles south of Diamond Head, in an area spanning approximately 12,000 acres where the turbines would be in depths of up to 700 meters. Meanwhile, its second farm - the North Shore project - would be located 12 miles northwest of Kaena Point, in an area covering nearly 11,400 acres with turbines in depths reaching up to 1,000 meters.

Offshore Wind Energy Is Only One Of Hawaii's Renewable Energy Efforts.

Hawaii has become a renewable energy testing ground for America and has received plenty of support from the U.S. Navy. Historically, the state has been heavily dependent on costly imported fossil fuels. However, it is currently working on expanding its renewable sources including, among others, wind, solar, and geothermal, and is even looking into alternative fuel sources, such as hydrogen fuel and biogas. Hawaii's goal is to obtain 100% of its power from renewables by 2040.

That said, in regard to offshore wind projects, it has been several years since there were any serious plans for this kind of development off the Hawaiian cost but, recently, major developers of these types of renewable energy projects are showing interest.

As for AWE's offshore wind energy plans, it still needs to make a deal with Hawaiian Electric Co. for a power purchase agreement.

2014 was a great year! Time truly flies. 2014 was truly a remarkable year for the growth of TeamKB. The year when the Kimroy Bailey Foundation installed its first operational wind turbine at the 100% Renewable Communite Center in Trelawny. The year when Kimroy Bailey Robotics was born and well positioned as the Caribbean's leading robotics, product prototyping and small scale manufacturing company. Hmmm a number of milestones were reached and great accomplishments were achieved in 2014. It was hard to bottle all the experiences to filter down a top 14 but without further ado here are a 14 of the greatest accomplishments for the year that was, 2-0-1-4.

14 THE KIMROY BAILEY FOUNDATION PARTNERSHIP WITH GENNEX


The Kimroy Bailey Foundation inked a BIG DEAL in 2014. The company joined forces with UK solar manufacturer GeNNex to bring low cost solar energy to the Jamaican population. Jamaica the land of sun, sand and sea. Beautiful sunrise and memorizing sunsets; sun left, sun right and sun center! The partnership with GeNNex will provide low cost solar lighting solution for the average Joe. Yes! From a farmer on a horse to the middle class on a budget will be able to afford these home lighting units. What's even more interesting about the partnership is that the Kimroy Bailey Foundation will teach persons how to assemble these solar products right here in Jamaica. This is a stepping stone to ultimately undertake manufacturing of the items here on the island. I told you 2014 was an awesome year and the countdown has just started. Not that this deal did not worth the number one spot on the countdown, just that I am so eager to share the good news I decided to start here! Work on the project will commence as early as January of this year, stay tuned for more info.

2014 was the year Kimroy Bailey Robotics decided to stop innovating for a moment and start showcase a few of the innovations we have been innovating. The company kicked off its publicity campaign by staging a grand showcase of cutting edge Jamaican Technologies at the Planning Institute of Jamaican (PIOJ) Labour Market Forum. The booth featured a host of advance technologies including the companies dual extruder 3D printer; a snapshot of BaileyBionic: the company's line of human-like robots and BaileyBotic: the company's line of mobile robots. A number of students from various institutions were intrigued by the Kimroy Bailey Robotics display including students and teacher from the Ardenne High School. 2015 will be the year of much more outings for the company as we aim to inspire innovators the invent Jamaica's way out of poverty by exporting aweome Jamaican made products and utilizing the Kimroy Bailey Robotics products and services every step of the way.

Renewable Energy has been a big part of our year, the commissioning of the JPS Maggotty Plant on March 26 could not miss our countdown. We have had days when we just think JPS is out to sabotage us and then there are days when the invest millions into Renewables over US36 million to be exact and we just have to be happy for such bold moves in this economic climate. The Jamaica Public Service Company added 7.2 MW of clean, green electricity to the national grid using the natural fall of the Black River. I had the great pleasure of touring the plant during the Jamaica Institution of Engineers annual Engineers Week 2014. The tour was very insightful and demonstrated that Renewable is RELIABLE! The facility now boasts two generation station, the projected created employment for up to 200 people at different stages of the development. Congrats JPS, you made our countdown!

Kimroy Bailey Robotics has had an eventful (inventful) year. We have been locked up in our lab, away from the world developing the program for BaileyBionic (more on that later in the countdown). The company has been formally operating for less than a year and has already out grown its lab space, a 12 feet by 12 feet room, what once was a dog house now a hub of innovation and second home for our 3 employees. In about September 2014 KB Robotics started expansion and a few months later we are now preparing to install new furniture and add equipment to expand our service offerings. The company provides a host of services to assist entrepreneurs to prototype or manufacture their innovations. KB Robotics also utilize interactive teaching tools to bring subjects such as Information Technology, Technical Drawing, Physics, Chemistry and Electrical Technology to life through hands on projects and machinery including our 3D Printer.

2014 marked the year Kimroy Bailey Robotics consulted with its first government agency. The KB Robotics Smart House was the center piece at the 2014 staging of the Jamaica Renewable Energy Expo. The consulted with the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining and shared their booth space to demonstrated the automated home model at the Renewable Energy Expo. The model demonstrated a 100% Renewable energy powered home using solar and wind energy. The automated home can employed at any home, anywhere as long as our hardware are installed at the facility. This then enables your home to be controlled via a mobile app from any where in the world. The controls built by Kimroy Bailey Robotics team empower home owners to turn lights on, off; receive text message whenever any motion is detected in the various parts of the home and a host of other features. 9 KB Robotics CXC Consultancy Trip To Barbados


2014 was the year when the Kimroy Bailey Robotics Consultation portfolio expanded as the months fade. The Caribbean Examination Council engaged our service and join a distinguish panel commissioned to create a course called Green Engineering. This course is designed to introduce students to the world of sustainability and environmentally friendly engineering practices. The consultancy engagement took me to across Caribbean waters to beautiful Barbados where the panel had our first face-face session. I am not sure if this earned its space because I consulted with CXC or because my job took me to Barbados. Either way it has been a grand opportunity and a grand experience, just have to give God thanks for the countless blessings in 2014.

8 Working At Wigton


On the 6th day of January 2014 I started a new chapter of my professional growth when I commenced my job at the Wigton Windfarm as a Service Engineer. Wigton is the largest wind farm in the English speaking Caribbean. The company is home to 23 Neg Micon 900kW wind turbines and 9 Vestas 2MW wind turbine producing a rated capacity of about 40MW of clean green energy. Wigton produces enough energy to power over 20,000 Jamaican homes consuming 2,000W each. 2014 provided me with the grand chance of working with local and international experts in the wind industry a priceless opportunity that only Wigton can provide. This experience earned Wigton the #8 spot on our greatest accomplishments of 2014 countdown.

7 Talk Up Yout' Feature.

2014 was a year when we smiled for the camera a few times but my Talk Up Yout' feature 'tek di cake'. Balancing a full time job at the Wigton Windfarm and keeping working in excess of 40 hour/week to grow Kimroy Bailey Robotics and the Kimroy Bailey Foundation is no easy task. This hard work and dedication paid off big time when the Talk Up Yout' team extended an invitation to be featured in Season 4 of the TV program. The Talk Up Yout' crew journeyed to the cold hills of the Cockpit Country in Trelawny on a semi-freezing Saturday morning to capture video footages of Kimroy Bailey in his world of work outside of work. The team had the grand chance of capturing the KB Farm inclusive of our pigs and chickens poultry farm; and yam, banana and cho-cho farm. After shooting the farm the team traveled to the Kimroy Bailey Foundation 100% Renewable Community Center in Litchfield, Trelawny a few minutes from the farm. The team wrapped up the feature by touring the Kimroy Bailey Robotics lab and recording a demonstration of the KB Smart House, Bailey Botics: quad copter and home security robots. The feature which was aired on TVJ had a grand audience online after it was shared on the Kimroy Bailey Facebook Page. The overwhelming feedback from Facebook friends and supporters bumped this feature up to #7 on our Countdown.

6 Kimroy Bailey Foundation 100% Renewable Community Center

The Kimroy Bailey Foundation has been working assiduously to energize the 1st Community Center in the English speaking Caribbean to be powered exclusively by Renewable Energy. The KB Foundation purchased its first wind turbine for the project in 2014 and gathered a few of our volunteers to install the wind turbine at the facility. The one day installation was a great milestone for the organization. The wind turbine generates up to 1000W of power, enough energy to power 8 laptops and other devices which will be utilized at the facility. The Kimroy Bailey Foundation also acquired and installed the requisite components to store and invert the wind energy such as a charge controller, batteries and inverter. The uniqueness of the project and the intended scale-ability and having similar centers in different regions of the island and eventually different regions across the Caribbean gave this development the #6 spot on our countdown. The Kimroy Bailey Foundation 100% Renewable Community Center will be used as a homework and internet access center and also as a hub to educate youths and unemployed individuals in the rural neighborhood.

2014 was an aggressive year for Kimroy Bailey Robotics not only was it the year the company was formally registered it was also the year the company decided to provide a fun learning Summer Program for high school students interested in learning about Robotics and Renewable Energy. Kimroy Bailey Robotics had two summer camp sessions and over 70 students enrolled. Each summer camp session ran for 5 days. The first three days students were introduced to robotics, divided in groups of four and provided with a mobile robot to build fun projects. Students were treated to a fun field trip on day 4 of the Wigton Windfarm where a demonstration of automation was showcased and an introduction to the world of renewable energy. The final day concluded the Renewable Energy component of the camp with a tour of the University of Technology, Jamaica solar panel installation. The camp was organized and executed by Kimroy Bailey and Dr. Dave Muir additional instructors included: Marlon Hutchinson, Raymond Ferguson and Shadae Crawford.

The curtains on The Kimroy Bailey Robotics Summer Camp were drawn with a grand closing ceremony featuring partners, sponsors, students, parents and specially invited guests. The event was covered by the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) team. Kimroy Bailey was the keynote speaker at the ceremony and Junior Minister in the Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining challenged the students to utilize the summer camp platform to innovate great products to propel the growth of our island. Some of our partners included: The University of Technology, Jamaica, Access Financial Services Ltd, Klesing Industrial Supplies, The Digital Yard Foundation, The Wigton Windfarm, GeNNex and The Scientific Research Council.

BaileyBionic is a robotic hand made in Jamaica at the Kimroy Bailey Robotics Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) in Trelawny. The hand is a derivative of the open source humanoid InMoov found on Thingiverse. BaileyBionic boasts two core control inputs: voice command and sonar sensing. The Sonar sensing feature was showcased at the PIOJ exhibition where patrons interacted with BaileyBionic by moving their fingers in front a sensor. Their motion was processed by a microcontroller which allowed BaileyBionic to record and repeat the movement of each finger in the corresponding order. Persons were amazed at the level of details BaileyBionic reproduced whether it was each finger going down and up, the fold of the fist, the pointing finger out and the other fingers closed or a thumbs up. BaileyBionic was able to replicate inputs with remarkable details in real time.

2 Family, Friends And Food

Family and Friends are a big part of who I am and played a vital role in who I've become. This countdown would have been flawed if family and friends did not have a reserved spot somewhere close to the top. 2014 was a year to take it slow every once in a while and link up with old friends and continually meet new friends. With no further ado let me say thanks to all my great friends for the support, encouragement and prayers.

Giving back has been a great part of who we are and as our companies continue to grow, Kimroy Bailey Robotics and the Kimroy Bailey Foundation is committed to contributing to the lives of Jamaican students through the #InnovationNation Award. The #InnovationNation Award is open to appplicant who has been apart of any of our Renewable Robotics program. During our tenure as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics consultant with the May Day High School Ashia Thompson had the pleasure of being apart of our robotics in school program. She demonstrated her passion for learning new technologies, working cohesively in team and applying herself to overcome challenges with limited resources. Ashia moved on from the May Day High School to undertake her 6th form education at DeCartteth College. She is a proud product of Kimroy Bailey Robotics and the recipient of 13 CXC subjects with 4 grade ones and 9 grade twos. The wouldn't be any better way to cap our countdown than to saying CONGRATS Ashia, keep making Jamaica proud.

VA - The Virginia House of Delegates and Senate voted to preserve a tax credit for electric utilities that burn coal mined in the Commonwealth. Governor Terry McAuliffe previously proposed a reduction in the tax credit to help offset a budget shortfall, but neither chamber agreed to the Governor's proposal. The policy reversal creates a 5.2 million shortfall in each chamber's proposed budget, and allows utility companies to claim no more than 7.5 million combined in any year. House, Senate preserve coal tax credit for utilities - "The Richmond Times-Dispatch"

WV - Governor Earl Ray Tomblin vetoed a bill, H.B. 2201, that would have required the state's Public Service Commission to set new guidelines for net metering, a proposal which advocates decried as jeopardizing the future of solar power in the state. Net metering, which differs by state, is a billing mechanism that credits solar energy system owners for the electricity they generate and add to the electric power grid. In his veto message, Governor Tomblin said he disapproved of the bill for technical reasons, but did not further clarify his position on the legislation's intent. "Due to a number of technical issues in the bill, I am unable to sign House Bill 2201 into law," Governor Tomblin said. "I encourage the Legislature to re-examine this piece of legislation and correct the technical issues outlined in my veto message." The Governors of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island are forming a regional partnership to expand the use of renewable energy sources and natural gas. Under the Governors' plan, electric utility companies in each state will work together with state agencies "to begin a competitive bidding process to seek proposals from supplies of clean energy resources." The Governors, which discussed the regional partnership during the recent National Governors Association's winter meeting, also released a draft request for proposals with a 30-day comment period. Governor Charlie Baker of Massachusetts said "this regional partnership will allow Massachusetts to acquire cost effective renewable resources for the commonwealths energy supply." Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy stated the joint venture may lead to larger collaborative energy projects. "By working together with neighboring states," Governor Malloy said, "we can make the most efficient use of our resources to attract new clean energy projects at the lowest possible cost for ratepayers while advancing our interests in reducing emissions of greenhouse gases." The Outer Continental Shelf Governors Coalition (OCSGC) met during the recent National Governors Association's winter meeting, agreed to lobby Congress for legislation "to set a multi-state strategy for revenue sharing from federal offshore energy development." The OCSGC, which first organized in 2011, has seven members, including Alabama Governor Robert Bentley, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, Maine Governor Paul LePage, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant, North Carolina Governor and OCSGC Chair Pat McCrory, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, and Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe. The Governors, however, have not yet reached a decision on a model for revenue sharing. "Right now weve got all these different bills on revenue sharing, and we would like to consolidate those into one bill," Governor McCrory said, referring to separate bills in Congress for Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. State governments usually control offshore waters as far as three miles, while the federal government controls the outer continental shelf. The American Energy Innovation Council, which is made up of six corporate executives, is urging Congress and the federal government "to make expanded energy research a strategic national priority." Members of the Council include Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt. The Council contends the United States has fallen behind other governments in energy research, which may hamper efforts to reduce carbon emissions and develop new energy sources. The group recently released a report highlighting their advocacy work and research and recommendations for policymakers. "Growing and consistent appropriations for energy innovation should be a top U.S. priority over the next decade," the business leaders recommended in their report. Dubai, UAE, 4 February, 2015: After the success of the inaugural Future Generation competition, the Informa Energy Group will once again be running the contest in March which was created to highlight the potential of undergraduate engineering students currently studying in the UAE.

The challenge for each participant is to design and develop an innovative solution for energy efficiency, energy conservation or alternative energy and present their ideas during Middle East Electricity and Solar Middle East, which take place from 2-4 March 2015 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. For the inaugural edition of the competition, visitors voted for the project they thought was the most innovative and viable. This year there will be two awards on offer, a people's choice award which follows the same system as last year, and a new judge's award, decided by a panel of three industry experts who will review all of the entries to ultimately determine their winning project.

The winners of last year's award were Zulfa A Rasheed, Amna Abdulla and Muna Dahir Ali from Ajman University of Science & Technology/Fujairah for their 'Wind Powered Water Lifting System' project, a renewable energy conversion system transforming wind energy to mechanical energy

Another standout project from last year's competition came from Emirati sisters Anood Al Hamadi and Aisha Al Hamadi from the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) Ruwais. The pair are the first Emirati female engineers to come from the UAE's Al Gharbia western region.

There is certainly no shortage of innovation for the next edition of the awards with a number of projects having already been submitted. One of the submissions by RIT-Dubai University uses existing technology to create a new solution. Using solar power for the energy source, thermo-electric coolers are used to generate a cooling effect which can bring down the temperature inside a parked car, which will be especially effective during the summer months. For the people's choice award, visitors will have a unique opportunity to see the designs which will be on display at the Future Generation stand located in Sheikh Maktoum Hall, speak to students about their ideas and vote for their favourite. The projects with the maximum number of visitor votes and the one selected by the panel of judges will be presented with a Middle East Electricity Award on Wednesday 4 March at 2:00pm in the Sheikh Maktoum Conference Hall.

Commenting on the success of the first competition, Anita Mathews, Director of Informa Energy Group, said: "The launch of Future Generation, a student competition designed to encourage young minds, was a great success. The projects on display last year were extremely creative, and it was really encouraging to see so many innovative ideas coming out of the UAE's higher education sector. We believe that young minds are our future leaders and nurturing these exceptional minds is our gift for tomorrow. This is certainly something we have built on for the 2015 edition of the event."

Well, today he sent me his paper, entitled, "Can the U.S. Drill Its Way Out of the Energy Problem?" However, as he has not yet officially released it to the general public, I thought I'd merely mention a few points and ask you to contact him if you are interested in the details (block@fsec.ucf.edu). Dr. Block said:-1....to the question from the title above: no.-2. He provides some very useful information on oil supply, demand and reserves, and carefully explains why future oil demand will not be met.-His key statement is: "Developing alternative energy sources has to be a priority and sound engineering principles must be applied to future energy resources." I might add that the important point has to be with respect to national priorities. In Peak Oil and Global Warming--call it PO/GW--the opportunity has not been provided to engineers to apply their skills. The problem, thus, is not a technical one, but political. Further, the fault is not particularly that of President George Bush or the U.S. Congress or oil company executives. What is lacking is public will. How then to influence the masses is the key to overcoming PO/GW.-The electronic media, represented by blogs and papers like THE HUFFINGTON POST, might well be the solution, for they feature instant feedback and exponential propagation of ideas. Protest marches are so last generation. HuffPo is close to publishing Part 4 of my series on a solution to PO/GW. FCEL, a global leader in the design, manufacture, operation and service of ultra-clean, efficient and reliable fuel cell power plants, today reported the closing of its previously announced definitive agreement to sell a 1.4 megawatt fuel cell power plant project at the University of Bridgeport to NRG Energy, Inc. NRG, Concurrent with the closing, a subsidiary of NRG, NRG Yield, Inc. NYLD, acquired the project; the first-ever fuel cell project placed into any yieldco. The University of Bridgeport will buy the electricity and heat produced by the fuel cell power plant under a multi-year power purchase agreement (PPA). FuelCell Energy developed the project and is in the process of completing the installation of the power plant. FuelCell Energy will perform operation and maintenance services for the installation over the multi-year term of NRG Yield's PPA with the University. The power plant construction is mechanically complete and commercial operation is expected in March 2015.

"This project is a compelling model where the University pays NRG Yield for the clean power it receives while averting the need to invest in the power generation asset itself," said Michael Bishop, Chief Financial Officer, FuelCell Energy, Inc. "The University also benefits by enhancing the resiliency of its power supply in a low carbon manner that is almost completely absent of the pollutants that generate smog, acid rain and that can aggravate asthma."

The fuel cell power plant provides ultra-clean electricity and heat to approximately 80 percent of the campus including the student center, the dining hall, the recreation center, two dormitories and the on-campus police station, and is configured as a micro-grid to operate independently of the electric grid in the event of a grid disruption. The ability to continue to provide power to these campus facilities despite the weather, provides energy security to the University administration as well as the students.

"We are working to replicate this model where the installation hosting the fuel cell installation and using the power benefits from the multiple attributes of our clean and affordable on-site power generation solutions utilizing a pay-as-you-go model with a financial intermediary owning the power generation asset," continued Mr. Bishop. "We can offer a variety of ownership and financial structures that best meet the needs of the site host that is using the power."

2015 Solarize Mass Installer Rfp Plainfield Ashfield Buckland Re Bid

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER), is requesting proposals from solar photovoltaic (PV) installers to bid on the community group of Plainfield-Ashfield-Buckland in support of MassCEC's Solarize Massachusetts program.

MassCEC is requesting proposals from solar PV installers to offer competitive tiered pricing and quality solar PV installations to customers under the Solarize Mass Program. Installers will be required to provide a direct-purchase option, and may also choose to offer a lease, power purchase agreement, or other innovative financing model for residential and small-scale commercial solar PV installations. Installer proposals will be evaluated by the selected Community representatives and a technical consultant, in partnership with MassCEC and DOER. The final selection will be based on overall quality of the proposal, including but not limited to, the installer's ability to provide quality customer service and installation services, ability to partner with the community, and competitive pricing.

China's great coal boom is grinding to a halt, and the consequences for both the global climate and hundreds of millions of Chinese factory workers could be dramatic.

Three trends have dominated the debate over China and climate change for the past decade: China's economy will grow by double digits, the country will burn more coal every year, and global emissions will continue to climb with no end in sight. China has grown to be the world's second largest economy and the No. 1 emitter of greenhouse gases, consuming nearly as much coal as the rest of the world combined.

But preliminary data from 2014 show that China's coal production just declined 2.5 percent, the first drop since the year 2000. Analysts are now predicting what was almost unimaginable just a few years ago: China's coal use could peak and begin to decline by 2020.

That dramatic shift would put China on track to meet its treaty pledge of peaking total emissions in 2030. Falling demand for coal reflects strict new pollution controls, growing renewable energy use, and an economic shift away from coal-intensive infrastructure development.

Cllimate scientists have been warning for a while that as the planet heats up, storms will become fewer but stronger. This trend has been seen in a variety of historical data tracking wind speed, rain and snow over the past century or so. Now a team of researchers has figured out why, and the explanation is firmly rooted in atmospheric thermodynamics. Global warming is intensifying the world's water cycle, and that drains energy from the air circulation that drives stormy weather, say Frederic Lalibert of the University of Toronto and his colleagues.

The researchers "have offered a thermodynamic explanation for what the models have been doing all along," says Olivier Pauluis of New York University, who wrote an accompanying perspective article on the study.

Earth's atmosphere acts like a gigantic heat engine, working on many of the same principles as your car's engine. Fuel--in this case, energy from the sun--is used to do work. Because more sunlight hits the tropics than higher latitudes, the planet constantly redistributes heat via air motions. Those air motions are the engine's work. They also help produce the rainstorms and snowstorms that can ruin your day. The engine isn't 100-percent efficient, though. Some heat is lost to space. And much of the remaining energy is expended in the planet's water cycle, used in the evaporation and precipitation of water.

It was 8 degrees in Minneapolis on a recent January day, and out on Interstate 394, snow whipped against the windshields of drivers on their morning commutes. But inside the offices of Cargill, the food conglomerate, Greg Page, the company's executive chairman, felt compelled to talk about global warming.

"It would be irresponsible not to contemplate it," Mr. Page said, bundled up in a wool sport coat layered over a zip-up sweater. "I'm 63 years old, and I've grown up in the upper latitudes. I've seen too much change to presume we might not get more."

Mr. Page is not a typical environmental activist. He says he doesn't know -- or particularly care -- whether human activity causes climate change. He doesn't give much serious thought to apocalyptic predictions of unbearably hot summers and endless storms.

MOST AMERICANS SUPPORT GOVERNMENT ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE, POLL FINDS

An overwhelming majority of the American public, including half of Republicans, support government action to curb global warming, according to a poll conducted by The New York Times, Stanford University and the nonpartisan environmental research group Resources for the Future.

In a finding that could have implications for the 2016 presidential campaign, the poll also found that two-thirds of Americans say they are more likely to vote for political candidates who campaign on fighting climate change. They are less likely to vote for candidates who question or deny the science that determined that humans caused global warming.

Among Republicans, 48 percent said they are more likely to vote for a candidate who supports fighting climate change, a result that Jon A. Krosnick, a professor of political science at Stanford University and an author of the survey, called "the most powerful finding" in the poll. Many Republican candidates either question the science of climate change or do not publicly address the issue.

With fossil fuels growing as sources of electricity across the globe, the IEA sees nuclear power as a stable source of low-carbon power helping to take polluting coal-fired plants offline.

The International Energy Agency and the Nuclear Energy Agency suggest in a report released Thursday that nuclear will have such a significant role to play in climate strategy that nuclear power generation capacity will have to double by 2050 in order for the world to meet the international 2C (3.6F) warming goal.

OBAMA MOVES TO PROTECT AGAINST FLOODING FROM RISING SEA LEVELS

President Barack Obama issued an executive order on Friday directing federal, state and local agencies to incorporate projections for sea level rise in planning and construction along the coasts.

The new Federal Flood Risk Management Standard requires that all federally funded projects located in floodplains, including buildings and roads, be built to withstand flooding. The requirement, the White House said in a release Friday, would "reduce the risk and cost of future flood disasters" and "help ensure federal projects last as long as intended."

"It is the policy of the United States to improve the resilience of communities and Federal assets against the impacts of flooding," the order states. "These impacts are anticipated to increase over time due to the effects of climate change and other threats. Losses caused by flooding affect the environment, our economic prosperity, and public health and safety, each of which affects our national security."

Large storms like the blizzard that battered New England this week may become more severe but less frequent as the Earth's climate changes, scientists said on Thursday.

The Canadian-led study noted that warmer air can hold more moisture, meaning more fuel for rain, hail or snow, and found knock-on effects on how the atmosphere generates storms.

"In a future climate, the global atmospheric circulation might comprise highly energetic storms," they wrote in the journal Science.

Even though the world's population is set to rise to 10 billion by 2050 from 7 billion today, the tool shows it is possible for everyone to eat well, travel further and live in more comfortable homes, without pushing global temperature rise above 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), the UK's Department of Energy and Climate Change said.

But to achieve that, we must use energy more efficiently, shift away from fossil fuels, protect forests and make smarter use of land, it added.

U.S. EPA CHIEF HOPES POPE WILL SPUR CONCERN ON CLIMATE CHANGE

The head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on Friday she hoped Pope Francis' upcoming message to his flock on the environment would help galvanize concern about climate change and convince sceptics that "the science is real".

EPA administrator Gina McCarthy, visiting the Vatican to discuss climate change, said U.S. President Barack Obama shared the pope's belief that it was a moral issue because its effects would be felt most by the poorest and weakest nations.

"The pope knows his own beliefs and I want him to know that the president is aligned with him on these issues," she told reporters.

WE CAN SOLVE CLIMATE CHANGE, BUT IT WON'T BE CHEAP OR EASY

Pretty much everyone who acknowledges the problem of climate change is hungry for good news about it, which makes sense, as most of the news is overwhelming and awful. There is high demand for optimism -- I hear it every time someone asks me to write or speak on climate -- so inevitably there is supply.

Take, for instance, Paul Krugman, who crows, in a column called "Salvation Gets Cheap," that "even under the most ambitious goals the [IPCC] assessment considers, the estimated reduction in economic growth would basically amount to a rounding error, around 0.06 percent per year." Joe Romm touts the same number in "Climate Panel Stunner: Avoiding Climate Catastrophe Is Super Cheap -- But Only If We Act Now."

I appreciate the can-do spirit, but as Krugman and Romm no doubt both know, the idea that aggressive climate mitigation is going to shave precisely 0.06 percent off GDP growth is utterly fantastical.

WHY IS THE 'CLIMATE PRESIDENT' APPROVING MORE OIL DRILLING?

Last week, President Obama rightly declared in his State of the Union address: "No challenge poses a greater threat to future generations than climate change."

This week, the Obama administration announced plans open up the Atlantic Ocean to oil and gas drilling and offer more lease sales in the sensitive Arctic waters off Alaska. Ramping up offshore drilling will not only raise the risk of disastrous oil spills and threats to wildlife, but will also deepen our dependence on the very fossil fuels driving us into the global climate crisis.

Here's the thing about dealing with global warming: You can't say you want to make it better and then do the opposite. Rhetoric won't curb carbon dioxide emissions and poetic speeches won't stop the seas from rising and the planet from warming.
